You need to look for mutual funds that have an expense ratio that is very low. They may be difficult to find but if you do your research, you can find no load funds that carry only a three percent or less.
There are fund that will charge less than one percent but they often require a bit more of an initial investment. Mutual funds are funds that are held over a group of companies and stocks. When you choose to invest in a mutual fund as opposed to an individual stock, your risk goes down where related to investing.
